My name is Andy Im 26 and I recently completed my Category C Test and wanted to document my experience from start to finish.
So from a young age i’ve always had a interest with anything that had a engine and I wanted a job that involved driving, When I finished secondary school in 2010 I ended up going to college to study engineering for 2 years and then taking a job as a structural MIG welder, I enjoyed the job but the one thing i really liked there was shunting the trailers around the yard with a old Volvo FL and thats when I wanted to start driving a LGV for a living I liked the challenge of getting through tight spaces and the thought of driving on the open road all day, I then looked into the costs of my Class 2 LGV course and at 18 years old earning peanuts it felt like it was going to take a lifetime to save up then I came across an apprenticeship scheme which covered my Medical, Theory test, CPC course, and 1 attempt at a driving test, unfortunately the driving test didn’t go as well as I hoped and really knocked my confidence out and I drove a van for the duration of my apprenticeship and then ended up as a Salesman for a garden machinery company based in somerset.
So what made me get back behind the wheel?
It was Friday the 13th of December 2019 and I got called into my office for a meeting it turned out that I was being made redundant so I then panicked about losing my job so close to Christmas and wondering how I was going to support my family as my partner didn’t work because she looked after the kids all day.
Then it came to me I was listening to the news that there was a 45,000 shortage of people driving LGV’s which made me think
“if I could pass my test I could almost walk back into work”
